Description

The .45 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol) was developed to meet the US Army’s need for a sidearm with better ballistics and faster reloading to replace their .38 Special revolvers.  In response, John Moses Browning developed the Colt 1911 semi-auto handgun with a .45 caliber cartridge for better knock down power and magazine fed for faster reloading.  The venerable 1911 served the US Army well for 75 years until it was phased out in the 1980’s in favor of the 9mm.

Browning’s pistol design was so good that the 1911 continues to enjoy widespread popularity in the civilian market that ensures the .45 ACP caliber’s longevity.  Think of the .45 ACP as the pistol equivalent to the 30-06 rifle caliber.  From mild to wild, the low pressure .45 ACP is one of the most forgiving calibers to reload today.

RELOADING HINT:  In recent years some ammo manufacturers have switched from the original large pistol primers (LPP) to the small pistol primers (SPP).  The SPP cases are difficult to sort from the more numerous LPP cases so orders could contain a mixture of primer sizes.  Users should inspect and store SPP cases separately for future reloading.  Our experience has been that there is no discernible difference in the performance (velocity and/or accuracy) of SPP cases versus LPP cases.

Unrelated to primer size, some .45 ACP pistols can be picky about bullet profiles.  Some pistols have feed ramps that do not like flat nosed bullets such as hollow points or semi-wadcutter designs.  If reloading with a new bullet style, we recommend only loading 10-20 the first time to see how your pistol cycles it.  Adjusting the OAL can sometimes correct issues but be aware that some pistols simply will not work reliably with some bullet profiles.
