Description

Clint Eastwood’s classic line in “Sudden Impact” sums up the .44 magnum, “Go ahead, make my day”.

Like the .38/.357 evolution, the .44 magnum evolved from the existing .44 Special caliber.  Developed and promoted by Elmer Keith, the .44 was intended to provide hunters with a pistol caliber that could ethically take down large game animals at 100 yards or more.

The .44 magnum is a versatile caliber for reloaders ranging from 750 FPS plinkers to 250g 1,500 FPS bear killers.   The .44 magnum in a carbine with decent sights is capable of 1-2” MOA and popular with hunters for use in heavily wooded areas.

RELOADING HINT: The .44 magnum is very similar to the .45 LC in both diameter and case length.  Fortunately, the diameter difference between the calibers is just enough to avoid mistakenly loading the wrong recipe.  A .44 magnum resizing die should not process a .45 LC case and .45 LC bullets won’t fit in a .44 case so mixing brass is more of an annoyance at the press than an actual hazard.
