Description

Like the lesson learned by the Army about the underpowered .38 Special, LEOs realized that the bad guys they were fighting during Prohibition had them outgunned.  The need for a caliber capable of penetrating car bodies and disabling engines led to the development of the .357 magnum in the early 1930’s.  In response, Smith & Wesson issued a revolver capable of handling the high pressure loads that could propel a 158g bullet to 1,500 fps.  The more powerful round was readily adopted by many LEOs, particularly rural sheriff departments and state highway patrols.   In the civilian market, the .357 magnum was accepted as a hunting round capable of taking medium sized game at short range.

RELOADING HINT:  .38 Special and .357 magnum case lengths are close enough to get mixed up so reloaders should be careful.  Any .38 Special case mistakenly loaded with high pressure .357 loads should be pulled immediately.  The cartridge will fire safely in a .357 magnum revolver but could be dangerous if inadvertently loaded into a .38 Special only revolver so inspect your cases prior to reloading.
