Description
Similar to the .45 ACP/Colt 1911 pistol development, the 30-06 was developed in 1903 to pair up with the US Army’s new bolt action battle rifle. It replaced the Army’s black powder based 45-70 caliber and gave the Army parity with other smokeless powder-based rifles. The 30-06 served the Army well for 50+ years until being replaced by the .308 and .223/5.56 rounds in the late 50’s.
WWI experience with the caliber led to many returning vets to adopt the 30-06 as the caliber of choice for North America big game hunting and long-distance target shooting.
