Description

Think of the .223/5.56 as the rifle equivalent of the 9mm in pistol calibers.  Like the 9mm, it has excellent ballistics, low recoil and low cost that make it a favorite with reloaders.

The caliber was developed to be used with the new M16 rifle adopted by the US Army in the early 60’s.  The intent was to replace the recently adopted .308 caliber M-14 which was found to have excessive recoil in full auto mode.   The reduced recoil of the 556 NATO would allow more accurate auto fire and the reduced weight would allow more ammo to be carried by soldiers.  The adoption by the US and NATO allies in conjunction with the Vietnam War has led the .223/5.56 to become the most popular center-fire rifle caliber in the world.  LEOs and the civilian markets have adopted the caliber to benefit from the economies of scale the caliber provides to ammo producers.

RELOADING HINT: A lot of 5.56 factory ammo is produced with crimped primer pockets which can cause annoying hangups when reloading with progressive presses.  When reloading for personal use we use a Frankford Arsenal Case Trimmer station and simply run every case through the primer pocket trimmer after trimming and deburring the case length.
